SAKAR is striving hard to provide the little babies with a loving and caring atmosphere in our Child Care Unit & ultimately finding them an opportunity to venture into a beautiful journey along with their adoptive families. Just like these blessed ones SAKAR also needs a top class, fully equipped HOME for itself & the children. Entire SAKAR family and not to mention the little ones; from the bottom of our hearts entreat you to help us realize our dream and sincerely appeal to you to come forward with a positive response and be counted as the most valuable social partner of SAKAR.
It is Sakar’s Silver Jubilee and we cannot contain our excitement. While the preparations for the function are in full swing, people have been asking us about our journey so far. Our journey of 25 years is an interesting one. The struggle was real, but our determination remained unwaivered. Our journey so far has been remarkable.
When we started our journey, there wasn’t a single registered adoption agency in Marathwada region. All the children were taken to Pune for adoption purpose back then. It was way back in 1994 when Indian Association for Promotion of Adoption and Child Welfare, Mumbai came to Aurangabad, that few like minded individuals from Aurangabad felt the need to work in the field of adoption for Marathwada Region. Thus SAKAR was born but only as Marathwada Chapter of IAPA. Later we got registered under Societies Registration Act.
When DWCD sent the first baby to SAKAR, we did not have proper infrastucture. We immediately found an adoptive family and handed over the baby after necessary formalities. Even the laws were not so clear.
It was only in 2000, that we got a licence for Child Care Unit and in-country adoption and then came our first Child Care Unit at Bindu Hospital.
The adoption scenario was not so great in Aurangabad till that time. Lack of awareness was a major cause of concern. SAKAR, took it as a challenge and started to sensitize people about adoption and conducted various Adoption Awareness Programs. SAKAR was instrumental in changing the mindset of large number of people regarding adoption. SAKAR conducted its first Adoption Awareness week in 1998 and since then the tradition continues.
The adoption scenario was well organized by this time. But something was pinching us. We conducted a research on the source of child admissions in SAKAR and to our utter dismay we found out that almost 98% of the admissions were children of unwed mothers from rural areas and around 99% of them were kids of teenagers. This was highly disturbing. We decided to address this issue and thus in 2001, we started with one of our most ambitious project till date- Kshitij. Till date we have reached to over 2 lakhs teenage boys and girls through Kshitij. (More on Kshitij coming soon)
Another landmark in SAKAR’s timeline is the QICAC – a movement initiated by CRY in collaboration with government department of Women and Child Development. QICAC stands for Quality Instituitional Care and Alternatives for Children. SAKAR was the nodal agency for Marathwada region. Mrs. Neelima Subhedar from SAKAR represented SAKAR at the State Level Core body.
Through QICAC, our project Kshitij was modified for the children residing in Balgruh in 8 districts of Marathwada. It is only then onwards that SAKAR truly emerged as a leading Social Activist Organization.
In pursuance of our goal, SAKAR then started “Thodasa Boluya”. This project targeted the college students. The main focus was on Pre- Marriage group counselling.
It is an irony that SAKAR which found homes for many children, still does not have a home of it’s own. Since 1994, we had changed our premises many times. However we are a step closer to our dream after SAKAR got selected forLoksatta’s Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada in the year 2017. Though it is still a rented premises, but it helped us to realize our dream of a home with a state of the art Child Care Unit with great amenities and a nice office.
2018 saw another landmark project in Sakar’s history- Lakshya. The main aim of this project is to try and mainstream children with learning disabilities. The response and outreach of this program has been tremendous. (More on Lakshya coming soon). It is noteworthy that SAKAR also hired professional help to conduct its programs.
This journey was made easy by love and support of so many well wishers. We are thankful to each one of you who made these 25 years so memorable for us.
We have a long way to go still.
As Robert Frost says- Miles to go before I sleep.
Miles to go before I sleep.
